Each time a major prize-giving event approaches, there’s always a demand for introducing of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, making space possible for most games within them.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything that year
- A different innovative game missed out in 2019
- A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
- Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as the most-played games globally and have been for many years.
The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
